I am going to guess loose spark plug.
(There is only a very very tiny chance this is correct, but if it is, heavens will I look smart.)
In all seriousness, sounds do travel so expect to check all the obvious things -- and then all the non-obvious ones. For example, someone posted last month that they had a sudden top-end tap , which turned out to be not a top-end problem at all, but a failed crank pulley . Assume that the sound is trying to fool you, and clear an afternoon to find it. You will.

It isn't this time, but I've actually had that once before. A friend told me about it too, he had it happen on his m16a grand vitara.

Just removed the valve cover. Everything looks to be in really good order. Replaced the gasket and cleaned the PCV valve while I was at it. Reinstalled it all.
Next I decided to pull the #2 injector plug as I saw some shiny bits on the piston. With the car running on 3 cylinders, the noise was still there and in the same rpm range. Reconnected #2 and pulled the other injector plugs one by one. That also made no diffrence.

Update: The issue has been found! The rubber on the crankshaft pulley is broken.

Great thread like a live update!
A new pulley will surely do the trick now, but please revert if it doesn't.
