Hi Yakuza,
Ref your comment:
"Funny as my 17/87 gears is not that loud in low. Of course there is more noise as the gears spin faster and the torque is 2-3 times or so higher.
I was used to my old homemade 4.16:1 transfer case in my SJ. And my Jimny has been stuffed with sound deadening isolation."
Is your whine noise louder in low range than high range? I will mainly be using high range so at speeds under 60 mph is the noice really noticable?
What was it like before your additional soundproofing was fitted assuming you had the low gears fitted before the sound proofing was added?
Whay sound proofing kit did you use? Was it an off the shelf kit or home made?
Thanks in advance.

Now years after while googling pro track gears I saw this question I hadnt replied to.
My trail gear low gear set whined alot in high range. and other noises made me put that transfer case on the shelf while I find out what to do with it. I think it is the worn gears and not so worn chain that make the worst noise. The low range is more straight cut so make more noise than the high range wich is OK for me and normal noise to be expected.
Still not decided what to do with it but thinking 7% high range would fit my 235's better than the 17%/87% I had. But prices.. My gen3 has the same ratios as the gen4 so been reading experiences from those too helping me decide. Waiting for the AI-bubble to burst now so the currency might help fund my investment.
My sound deadening is cheapish bitumen sheets with adhesive on them bought at a car parts store mostly, but inside the doors I have similar and thicker bitumen sheets from a loudspeaker car hifi shop. Havent done the fire wall lower part and transmission tunnel yet, so I can still hear my driveline.

With mine, I don't notice any difference in noise between 2H and 4H. In 4L, it is noisy with a capital F.Hi Yakuza,

There is no difference between 2H and 4H. as there should not be as just as many gears are in motion. There is a difference between high and low but there still is noise in high range.
when putting lower range gears in the box there will be a lesser helix angle and more straight cut gears so there is less extra strain on the housing with the lower range. If there is any significant change in the ratio there will be more noise from the more straight cut gears. unavoidable to prevent breaking the housing.
The noise in high range comes from the chain and it rotates all the time the car is moving.
but my chaindriving gears are worn. I put the new gears in without changing the chain and the trailgear (in mine) and also protrack (other brand) are both cast wheels and not billet machined like Sumo Gears. They will always make noise during wear-in and especially with a used chain I think. Also cast wheels will wear out faster than billet wheels if machined and produced correctly.
The Pro Track gears might be better than the Trail Gear or made in the same factory I have no idea.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

I'd have thought the noise comes from the reduction gears which are permanently driven, rather than the chain.
A hyvo/silent chain is very quiet, which is why they are used. (Although Suzuki somewhat shot themselves in the foot dropping the epicyclic reduction gear of the Gen 3 lever transfer to go back to the gear driven variety- my Gen 4 is a lot noisier than my old Gen 3 ever used to be in high, and it has over 100,000 less miles of wear on it!)
