Hi,
Happy New Year and all that. Oil seal has given up on the rear axle, and also rear diff seems a bit noisy (think it is the diff), so got the wheels off it, and drums off. Looked to try and get the backing plates off, but the 4 x 12mm nuts that need to be removed are looking like they have never been off. They are too small for a 12mm, and too big to fit an 11mm spanner?? So, can these be left in place and just pull out the half shaft?
Thanks,

Unfortunately not. That plate is what holds the bearing and halfshaft in position. Maybe try a damaged bolt extractor?

First wire brush as much of the paint and rust as possible. If the surface is so badly damaged with corrosion that a normal spanner will not work, first try a release agent and then, if you have them, either a single hex. socket or single hex. combination spanner. The nuts are only tightened to 20 lbs.ft so resistance should be pretty feeble.

Another thing that may help is heat. If you have a pencil point blow torch the carefully heat the nut. The nut expands and the heat will break up the rust so try a suitable socket/spanner as soon as you remove the heat. Make a suitable heat shield to keep the flame where you want it.

Done! Plenty of penetrating oil and a decent socket. I was using a socket that fits multiple heads (lots of grooves in it) if that makes sense? I used a different one with only 6 sides and that gripped better. Used a big ring spanner for leverage and managed to remove them. Next task is to work out how to get the handbrake cables off and block up the brake pipes.
