2015 air filter box information

On the air filter box of a 2015 jimny there is a sensor just after air filter there is a plastic grid around the sensor, to me it looks like a restriction
Has anyone cut the plastic grid out to see if it flows better
Would it affect the operation of the sensor
Thanks Neil

My guess would be the sensor is the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and I assume the Jimny uses a hot wire type, in which case you have to protect the sensor from debris otherwise it causes contamination of the wire surface and the sensor no longer works correctly.

You should never touch the sensor, you can get specialist cleaners but Halfords Electrical Contact Cleaner works just as well as it evaporates quickly and leaves no residue. A MAF will usually only clean once or maybe twice before it is time to replace, so I would make sure the air filter is a good fit and there are no leaks as dust across the MAF will soon destroy it.

Trust that the engineers that designed your car were smart enough not to put a restriction directly in the air intake.

Thanks Busta and Dr Robin
I was thinking all vehicle manufacturers hands are tied they have to comply to all sorts of regulations not just what comes out of tail pipe intake noise has to be reduced
One thing that puzzles me on the series 4 I was looking at intake snorkel the opening is smaller than the throttle body

The air filter should take care of debris, so it's likely function is aerodynamic. They use screens to reduce turbulence in air flow (laminar flow), something that would improve the accuracy of an air sensor placed after it. So if it's the MAF this would be the likely function.
You are correct though, manufacturers do fit items to comply with regulations and these can impact performance. This I believe is more about accuracy, so removing it is unlikely to improve performance and possibly could even reduce it.
Just my ponderings.

Thanks Scimike, that makes sense, always good to ask the forum before hacking at things and taking a backwards step
