New engine noises!

Starting to fall out with Little Jim. Just had new clutch fitted, with older type gearbox and lever transfer box (not the best decision I ever made!). So, on road gearing is now too low, it needs more welding, and now engine noises! I now have a whirring noise from the engine (increases with revs) and a knocking noise which seems to be at bottom of engine. I know these are not related to the gearbox swap, and engine is only on 67K with good history. Could it be a faulty knock sensor (and can I get a 2nd hand one?), or am I looking at chucking more money at this?

I'm not sure about a knocking noise but whirring noises are often a sign of a worn out belt tensioner. They are pretty cheap to replace. Try removing the power steering belt. If the whirring goes away it's probably the tensioner.

I'll also suggest the tensioner or alternator for the whirring noise. A mechanics stethoscope is the tool to have, located my whirring noise and it was the tensioner. Not much money from Amazon etc.

As to the knocking, if it wasn’t there before the clutch fit then its likely something got disturbed during the work. Engine knocking will be present even at a standstill, so get underneath and have a listen with your new stethoscope!

Is it possible it’s the exhaust, gearbox lever etc disturbed during the clutch fit, or even the clutch arm?

Start simple and work your way up the list.

I had a whirring noise, but no knock. I had not access to a stethoscpope then, and just used a wooden stick. pressing it against the item i wanted to listen too, and listened to the other end of the stick. I found my disintegrated cat was rattling inside the manifold, but your desription does not sound like this.
Just wanted to to give a tip on the stick.

I have bought a stethoscope now, and as predicted i have not had any use for it yet. When I buy a missing toolkit, the problems connected seems not to occur anymore :side:

^^^^ A stick is a good alternative, I've also used a long screwdriver. Obviously put the screwdriver handle to your ear, not the sharp pointy end
