Need advice for 02 plate front axel replacement was created by SjTheJam
Hi all, some of you may remember this Jimny from a few years back, it was my brothers and now I'm the proud owner.... I need some advice on sourcing replacement front axle as my swivel joint has appeared on the MOT advisory. Otherwise its pronounced dead. Live in Suffolk

What is on the advisory?
Rust is normal for most and should not normally be an issue. The seal only keeps water out, it's not an oil seal like it is on a Land rover, which is a fail.
Play is normally king pin bearings, again not something that require a new axle.
Just wondering as it's unusual to replace the front axle.

I'd second the above, it's unusual to need a front axle unless you have managed to snap one of the tubes from the centre which takes a lot of doing. It is however quite common for a garage/mot centre to offer up spurious reasons for doing unnecessary work because they are unfamiliar with the workings of a jimny, been there got that particular t-shirt.

If it is rust or wear marks then repair is practical but labour intensive .It involves stripping each swivel, cleaning all traces of rust, filling the grooves with Isopan or similar, sanding to a smooth surface, painting and then re-assembly with new parts as necessary.

The MOT advisory states: nearside front swivel ball leaking.

As a temporary measure, you could always clean of the grease and take it back for an MoT.
Then, when you have the time, repair the ball as I have suggested.
