Valve Clearence 4th gen jimny was created by ABOLesen
Hello New user here.

According to the service manual, the valves on the 4th gen Jimny should be checked every 40.000 km. I am used to checking the valves on my motorcycles, and I suspect it isn’t any more difficult on a Jimny. I do find it a bit weird that it should be necessary to check the valves with so small intervals though. What are your thoughts on that?
Can I be so lucky, that any of you able to provide me with the valve clearance specifications? Maybe even some good advice for the check/adjustment on this specific vehicle.

Thanks in advance

Yes, it's every 40,000 km but it is also every 24 months, whichever comes first!. Clearances, checked when cold are: - inlet 0.14 - 0.23 mm, ex. 0.3 - 0.4.

Now that is the answer to your question, but it doesn't stop there. If you remove the cam cover and check the clearances and find they are ok, you breath a sigh of relief, put it back together and then put the kettle on, That is if you can get hold of a new gasket. They are apparently on back order. But what if the clearances are out? Then you have a problem because the cams operate onto "buckets" and Suzuki decided not to use separate shims. If the clearance is wrong you have to change the bucket, and that means you need to strip out the cam/s to measure the old bucket to select a new one. Phew that's a bummer, but all is not lost. I have a gen.4 and it has just had it's 24 month service at 6,900 miles at which they should have checked the clearances but the technician didn't see check clearances on the work sheet because it wasn't there because he was working off a sheet for an Ignis which doesn't have it (check valve clearances that is ).
Are you still with me? that's good because most people/dealers don't check them because the clearances are quite wide and the chances of them moving are pretty remote.
My advice, leave well alone until you reach 40,000km, and then listen for any ticking.

Roger

I've checked countless motorcycle engines with bucket / shim type arrangement and it's all been a waste of time. They very rarely move from the gap set a the factory, modern materials and valve inserts are just that good these days. Sure the first check will establish if everything has settled down within tolerance, but they usually are. After this it's pretty much a waste of time until the engine is worn out.
AS far as I am aware my G3 has never been checked, it sounds perfect, I won't bother unless I need to venture below the cover for other reasons.
I guess you need to get the book stamped for the warranty, but as soon as you are past this point I would not bother with the 40k /24 month intervals myself.

Just my opinion, it's your car and your money to do with as you wish.

Hi,been reading this article about k15b valve adjustment, i have no experience with this motor but seems strange you have to replace bucket
My bike and some others have shim under bucket, shim diameter is common between Suzuki, Honda and Kawasaki motorcycles
I'd be interested to know if Suzuki re invented the wheel for the k15b, why would they do something different when service parts sometimes on the shelf

Suzuki save money by building a quality engine that is as simple as possible and having one item, a cam follower bucket is simpler than a cam follower and a shim. Testing will have proven, as confirmed by Scimike, that once set up, this system rarely moves, so why complicate it.
