Hello.
i’ve been the proud owner of a 2003 Suzuki Jimny since 2016. Other than the usual wheel bearing and king pin issue, it’s never let me down - until now.
it started to cut out when approaching or setting off from junctions. Idle was eratic and then plummetted and cut out. Would start again after about 10seconds but engine management light would stay on. Plugged in diagnostics tool which flagged up crank shaft sensor which we changed for a new quality sensor. This solved the problem for around 12hrs then started again. Same fault code came up so swapped Cam sensor. Again, solved initially but then contined to cut out.
We dropped the tank, drained the fuel, checked the pump/filter and all seemed fine. Also fitted a new throttle body. Problem continues.
One specialist suggests it’s an ECU problem. Another thinks it’s more likely to be a work cam chain. Not sure which path to follow or if there are other potential causes we could check out first.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as it’s a beloved vehicle which i want back on the road - the temporary replacement Vitara is just not the same!!
Thanks
Hannah

Have you checked/replaced the coils and wires and spark plugs? They are not directly monitored so don't give proper codes.

With problems like this it’s hard to find the fault from a distance. You said you have used a diagnostic tool to fault read the car. Depending on the fault codes you should be able to see if the ecu is at fault or not. I have never heard of a cam chain giving this sort of problem. From what you have said it looks like there is a time factor involved, this sort of rules out the cam chain. It points more to an electrical fault. Have you checked the coil, these can start playing up when warm. Michael

Thanks for you advice everyone. I’ve managed to sort this problem now… the crank sensor (which was the first thing we replaced) seemed to have a bit of play in it. Replaced with a genuine Suzuki sensor and it’s been happy as larry ever since.
