ATF on the Transfer case? was created by yakuza
Watching the Fab Rats or BleepinJeep or Mats Offroad Recovery channel yesterday on youtube and the restoration of the golden nugget LJ20.
Recommended watching for any Suzuki nerd!
I heard someone on there saying that if you had a chained transfer case you should use transmission fluid and not gear oil on it.
These guys are american so not to be trusted maybe, but I have heard others also putting ATF on their gearboxes.
I got the chained transfer case in my 2005 Jimny. After gearing down the sprockets for the chain was also swapped for a 17% lower high range. after this the chain makes a kind of growling sound when I take off. I am guessing it has more or less slack now. A strange noise but it has to be vibrations from the chain at a particular load and rev count. it is worse with a trailer or going up hill.
So I would like to try the ATF inside my transfer case just to see. Or to listen actually.
Any objections?
anyone got any recommendations on what fluid or gear oil to try?
Now i got a high quality gear oil 75/90 in it.

love Fab rats and Matt's but they sure feck up that golden nugget. I would have tried to keep it original. maybe I am just an old timer.
now fabs and matt build this little huge mud rock crawler, they adding vitara engine. lift the chassis. bigger wheels.
if I get in car I drove 40 years ago, sure I would love to drive it in similar condition, same engine replacement side. same wheels, same suspension and I can go, who, this brings back memories.
the only item that might be the same is the color yellow.
driving a little rock crawler, different suspension, double the size engine.
absolute no recollection to His original golden nugget must take "the" moment away for him. he is no crazy off road 4x4 guy.
personally I would have loved to just be able to drive a proper similar one.
for me I am devastated the direction they going.
about your fluid question. sorry I have no expertise on that.

This points out a few differences
granvilleoil.com/news?artID=9
SO viscosity (thinner) and a lower operating temperature appear to be the main difference. I would think you need to go thicker to stop vibration of the chain if that's what you suspect.
I would stick with gear oil myself as I have seen first hand just how hot a Jimny transmission can get (I tow a lot). Maybe single grade SAE90, you can go higher (140).
In the short term ATF probably won't cause any issues if you want to try it, but long term I believe Suzuki know best and recommend the best grade to balance wear and fuel economy.

I'm a big fan of MORR and Fab Rats. No issue with what they're doing with the Golden Nugget considering that it was basically a wreck. They've already said that Ed needs an auto box and at his age he's not going to choose to drive an ancient, tiny stroker, so the engine/gearbox swap make sense. They're not going full rock crawler, just a slight lift. The changes will actually make it usable rather than creating a throwback that's too outdated to use.

I am totally with you gadget. Take also into consideration the state this half a wreck was with the other half missing, and what effort was put into getting it out of there.
But now this thread left its topic of gear oil.
But I guess I two minutes ago did the same to another post so I'll stop now.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

My old RangeRover had the BorgWarner chain driven transfer and ran on ATF. You couldn't use 75/90 as BorgWarner use a little oil pump rather than rely on sloshing it around as you go along, and the pump would break at -30 with 75/90 in it.
BorgWarner is a very popular transfer box on American vehicles, they likely think it is a BorgWarner.
The advantage of an oil pump is you can run the box virtually dry and the gears & bearings don't fail.
