When you look at the gate on the selector you pull back into D. You can then go across without going back that locks out 4th. Go back again and you have 2nd and then the last position is first. This was you can tell the box the upper limit of the gears it can select so on say a long motorway incline you can select 3 to stop the box hunting between 3rd and 4th and loosing momentum. It's also useful off road as it allows some engine braking when decending steep drops rather than accelerating out of control. You soon get used to it.
