Sounds like the clutch to me, not the cable. The cables are cheap though and easy to change, so it might not be the end of the world to change it as a process of elimination but I'm sure it's the clutch.

The propshafts don't need to be bolted on a specific way, but they will vibrate if the ends are not correctly aligned.

Obviously this doesn't apply to the rear prop which has a CV joint at one end.
