Hi,

Can anyone give me some tips on fitting a front crank shaft seal?
I've tried twice and ended up with the inner edge going on twisted - as per the attached photo.

  • If I try to press it in with my thumbs either I can't or the spring pops off the seal!
  • If I line it up carefully and press it on with the crankshaft timing belt pulley it still ends up twisted as per the photo

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Tim

I have not done that seal but on similar larger diameter seals I have used the old seal backwards as in face to face to gently drive the new seal in, kinda like using a lump of brass bar to drive bearings home, just something to protect the new part that is the right size. I also keep coveting one of those press sleeves kits that B.O.M used on project Binky but I don't have a spare 80 quid.

Make sure the taper on the crankshaft end at the front is super clean and smooth, it helps guide the inner part of the seal. It's the end of the inner seal surface, it should have a very small guide taper. The same is also true of the recess into which the seal is pressed. You can polish these surfaces with some 2000 wet and dry paper, but clean the area after the polish. Once clean and shiny oil the surfaces to make them slippy before installation.
You also need to try and tap it in uniformly, I tend to make a tube to hit and as Lambert use the old seal as protection for the new.
Good luck.
