Had CAT converter checked and it is OK to go. Found the back end fuel rail bolt was slightly loose leaking a small amount fuel, have tightened and sealed that. Thought that was the problem but it wasn't.
The symptoms persist, more so when the engine gets to operating temp, its affecting the idle , the idle fluctuates from approx. 800-850 rpm to 1000, up and down, erratic, it did stall once at idle. Today it drives ok but the idle was more the problem. Its erratic, it can occasionally feel like a misfire, sometimes a little surge but not consistent. Its strange.

Then Martin's assessment of a sensor being bad is correct.

Idle going up and down can be a split hose in the intake/emissions system.
A test for this is to carefully (its explosively flammable) squirt "Easy-start" around the pipes. If the revs rise then you have found the hose thats leaking.

Excellent! Old fashioned, easy route mechanics. I doubt they still teach this stuff which partly explains high labour charges. Chris

Gday Martin and All , Ive pulled the cam sensor out and it is wet with oil. Is it supposed to be in contact with the engine oil? Owl

Yes did that with some carb clean spray and nothing definite came of it. I thought for a minute when I sprayed the fuel regulator the engine stumbled but later it didn't show symptoms. The carb spray cooled the area down for a short time.
