Gen 3 clutch problem was created by JackBates
Hi guys!
I have a gen4 but the girlfriend is after a gen3 after falling in love with mine.
Test drove one today and the clutch was hurrendous. 90% of the travel was floppy with no action on the clutch and no sort of resistance. The last 10% is stiff and have to jam the pedal into the floor to disengage the clutch to change gear.
Is it a cable actuated clutch on these or hydraulic? Is there any kind of adjustment that could solve this? Sound like air in the system if hydraulic? From my experience of classics I would say the clutch is worn to bones but not having any specific jimny knowledge wanted to ask here incase this is known of.
If clutch is gone, what's the average cost for replacement in these?
Thanks in advance!!
Jack

It's cable and there is some adjustment on the end under the car

Would you say it's a stretched cable sounding deal or clutch at end of life? Are they characteristically heavy on the gen3's?

Clutch itself does wear and get mud on the splines.
The cable is lined with nylon which wears through on the curves making the cable heavy and stick

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

They are not heavy in use. The cable can be adjusted at the gearbox end, turn the plastic nut type adjustment. 10mm of "free play" until you feel the pressure increase (measured at foot pedal tip). Note "free play" is still on the pedal spring return, so it's not sloppy, but when pressed you can feel the point (10mm) at which the clutch arm starts to move the clutch plate.
Could be shot cable as Martin said. I would think it would feel similar to your GEN4 unless it's an auto.
