The noise seems to come from the middle bottom edge of the rear door,rather than the wheels. With all the other noises a Jimny makes, opening the windows does not help track it down!
Is the test of wheel bearings just to rock the wheels by hand?
I was hoping it was just the exhaust loose, but seems it may get expensive!
The mechanic I know is on holiday at the moment, so hoping to find the problem before I see him.

Pull up the wooden panel in the boot and check the jack storage area for things rattling around and for rust holes in the boot floor allowing sound in.
Check the rear exhaust silencer for holes and mounting security. Is the exhaust blowing?
