There's just a groove the C-clips sits in. Which is also why it's such a pain the ass to take it apart again, should you ever break a shafts.

Trust me, its just as hard of a job to get the stub axle out WITHOUT the C-clip fitted as it is in. What a time I had getting it back out to fit the c-clips. Some sort of hydraulic vacuum lock had happened we think, stopping the stub axle sliding out easily :evil:

What happened without the c-clip is that the stub axle slid into the CV further than its supposed to, and thus out of the diff (or at least to the point of chewing the shaft end a bit :-( ). I conclude that the c-clip is very important therefore :laugh: cost me some new half-shafts and beer for the guy who got the shafts out of the CVS!
