Cool, my wife's spoken to a mechanic who is going to quote for removing it properly, but if it's too much I'll try that.
He actually told her it would be OK to drive a short way just pushed in, so that supports your suggestion on the pressure.
Thanks again for the help, I was feeling proper gutted when I did it, but a bit more optimistic now.
One last question about the screw thing, I'm assuming it's not the sort of bodge that's going to twist the knickers of your average MOT man is it ?

You do not need a left hand drill. Just use standard drills as you are just drilling in effect a hole that has to be finite to the bolt shank dimension to allow the tap to cut a new thread. Much better result than a bodge and should not take too long. patience and good eyes and hand is all that is required.

Hi Guys
Ok, new idea, someone suggested araldite to fix it in, which I wasn't keen on. However having seen the metal bond araldite I'm thinking about a bolt either side with the thread sticking out, then something between the two, over the sensor, and a couple of nuts to secure.
Saves any drilling or threading etc, can anyone see a reason why this isn't a good idea ?

Yes. What if you have to replace the "new" one? Drilling and retapping isn't all that difficult. In fact if you are lucky and your drilling sizes are good you could find that retapping will not be needed as the old thread might just wind out. But if that fails then revert to the bodge.

That's why I like this, if I ever have to change it again I just undo the two nuts to remove the 'strap' and then swap it over
If I do anything else I risk having a bolt or self tapper through the sensor that I can't remove if I do anything wrong
