Carrying Bikes was created by templogin
Hello Folks

I had a quick search but couldn't find anything specific to my query so ...

Just seen a 61 reg Jimny at the local garage with less than 14,000 miles on the clock in nice condition. I need on occasion to carry a couple of bikes. This has no towbar fitted at this stage. What is the best way of carrying two bikes on one of these, and will I be able to leave the spare wheel in place on the back door? Should I be looking for a particular towbar/bike rack combination?

Thanks a lot

Andy

You're right there! Neither of us are particularly tall either, so roof based stuff might require a small ladder!

I've got one of those Thule towball fitted "3 bicycle" carriers (yeah if two are fairy cycles, you'd never get 3 adult 'bikes on without removing handlebars & pedals ;) ).
This one I think, or an older version of it www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-racks/towb...bike-tow-bar-carrier

Anyway, it is like a kid's tipper truck, with a pivot bolt in the middle, so you can drop the lights on the road, and still not be able to open your boot, so a quick couple of holes with the black & decker and I moved the pivot out 6" so I could mount two 'bikes just with the spare on.

Not half rickety though it sticks out a long way, and I reckon it needs pipe insulation round the frames of the bikes, and straps to the spare wheel.

Haven't dared use it in anger though, I can get 2 mountain 'bikes in The Other Car with the front wheels off

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

I'm new to the Jimny however I've found it great at bike carrying. I've got a Thule rack on the roof as mentioned and then use a standard carrier on the rear. Its kind of fits/slips over the back wheel and works a treat. I've carried 2 bikes on without issue.

Not a problem. I use a collapsible Italian bike carrier that folds up really compact when removed. Quick clamp to towball and built-in locking bar.
