Alternator bearing was created by Mike G
Hi all,

I'm trying to chase down some noisy bearings on my jimny (M13). Does anyone know what type of alternator is used on the engine and if there's a bearing kit available via bigjimny store?

Are there various alternators used on different years, or are suzuki quite consistant with the brand and models they use on the jimny?

Also, does anyone know if the power steering tensioner belt bearing on the bigjimny store is for the M13?

You will never get the alternator casing apart without breaking it, I spent a long time trying on mine, and when I took it to the rebuilders they wouldn't touch it, as they can't get them apart either once they are a few years old.

You might be in luck with the tensioner

There is always some play in the tensioner bearing as it is a single row ballrace, and you can rattle it a bit.

Best drop the power steering belt off and run the engine to see if the noise goes, then try it with the fan belt off (not for long though  )

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Ah, gutted.

I didn't fancy shelling out for a brand new one. I don't suppose soaking it in WD40 overnight would make any difference? Did you noticed what brand it was, lucas, bosch or something like that?

Yes, I'll definitely drop each belt off for a short time and ensure it's not something else.

I would look to do this to identify for sure where the problem comes from.

A re builder should be able to remove the casing and replace bearings. My father in law had been doing it since 1985 until he wound down his business recently.

Going to have a look at it as soon as I recover from an op. Once I undo the bolts, there's no going back and I'll be committed to using the motorbike until I fix it. If it's the alternator making all the racket, I think I'll have a crack at it myself. One thing's for sure, I know it's not the water pump as I changed that for a brand new one very recently.
