Mounting Fuel Cans on Spare Wheel was created by Buster1955
Hey, Folks.
Hope you're all getting muddy out there!
As some of you may remember, we live in Australia and find ourselves travelling into the wilderness on a pretty a regular basis. One enduring concern we have is that, not only are there very few fuel stations in the outback but even the ones that do exist in the smaller towns rarely supply an octane rate higher than 91. We have been looking at putting a tray on our roof rack to carry extra fuel, but these are petty expensive. One cheap solution for us is that we have just removed 20lt fuel can carrier from our car trailer and we noticed that the fixing holes line up exactly with the spare fixing stud holes in the spare wheel on the back door. So we could mount a fuel carrier there.
Our concern is if this might damage the door, hinges, or spare wheel mount by loading another 20kg to spare wheel and then start bouncing around in the bush.
Any recommendations of warnings?
Cheers,
Buster.

You could strap the spare to the roof to save a bit of weight on the door?

I suspect it would be a bit too much weight for the dooer as you say. What about a 10l can behind each seat, in the rear footwells? That's assuming you aren't carrying passengers!

My rear door hinges need replacing just from a bigger spare tyre so fuel will ruin them!
