second gear noise was created by Mike G
Hi all,

Sometimes when changing into second gear, I hear the gears have a little crunch. It doesn't do it every time and feels like the synchro-mesh is not working correctly. It only happens when changing into 2nd gear, but sometimes I can pop it in without hearing the noise slowly, sometimes I don't need to make any effort and change as normal.

Just wondered if this is something that others might have experienced with M13 gearboxes. Is it a known fault or a symptom that's worth fixing now and avoiding an expensive job later on? I've never taken a gearbox apart and don't think I should start now. If something needed done, I think it would have to be a professional job.

Many thanks

I've never added any additives of any kind apart from standard oils.

Any resistance in gear stick when sound occur ? If there is resistance then When was the last time you changed clutch fluid? it expire with in one year and lost is hydraulic punch ability which could make clutch disengaged a bit rough

nope. The gear stick operates fine. I have a manual version, so I don't think any clutch fluid would be required. I do believe the gearbox oil is due a change. I will change that and see how it fares.

Its cable clutch if a manual. It sounds like that gear synchro ring is starting to wear. A oil change with the correct oil might help but a suitable additive could help also. It wont fix the wear but it might help make the changes smoother. Try not to rush the change too.
