How fast should the thermostat open? was created by Gerula
As it happens when you start doing small repairs yourself, you end up with the "maybe I should also do this" syndrome

So I started to wonder if the thermostat in my Jimny (G13BB engine) isn't opening a bit slow. With outside temperatures just above freezing, it needs a full 5 min drive (town) to get the dash temp gauge in mid-level position and maybe another 2 mins to get the heater to blow hot air. That happens in the morning with a cold engine.

I'm thinking that it should be able to deliver hot air inside the cabin much faster? What is your experience in similar outdoor temperatures?

Problem is that it's not very cold now :) , this morning I had about 5 degrees Celsius outside my house .

On other cars I've had I remember that the engine temperature was rising quite faster, maybe 2-3 minutes in late November - early December, when outside temperature was a few degrees above freezing.

All this with cabin radiator closed, of course.

I said "on other cars I've had" :) (which is a lot of cars during the last 25 years).

When was the last time you changed the thermostat? Yours may be on it's way out as well, 5 mins when outside temp is 20 C seems a lot.

Thank you, this means that on the 88 C thermostat it would be normal to see the gauge get to working temperature in about 5 minutes.

If others have different experiences please share :)

My 2000 twin cam warms up pretty quickly and is quite warm within a few miles to 89'c which it sits at for most of the time unless under strain on a long motorway hill when it might creep to 94'c.

I have a scangauge so can monitor it to the degree.

Mine starts blowing hot air before the gauge gets to the middle. I'd say hot air in 3 minutes, gauge levels out at 5 minutes. That's a M13a, driving straight onto fast country roads. 5 minutes doesn't sound preposterous though. Ever driven a Landrover Defender? By the time the heater starts to work it's summer again.
