Both lower brake lights failed at once was created by Gerula
Today while doing the much delayed chore of checking the cars lights I noticed that both the lower brake lights ceased to work. The upper one still works, so this rules out the pedal switch and the fuse.
The position phase of the bulbs works, as well as the turn signals so this rules out the "classical" grounding point problem.
I thought the only plausible possibility was that both bulbs burned just the brake phase within a short time. So I swapped one of the bulbs with a new one. No joy, still no brake light.
At this point I think it's clear that the wire going from the fuse box to the back harness is broken somewhere. Car is left hand drive so the harness is going to be different from those found in right hand drive Jimnys.
Is there some obvious point where I should look? I was under the impression that the harness for the lower lights has no business with the back door and therefore is much less susceptible to such problems.

Harness at the back of the rear bumper can deteriorate. The connection is at the lhs on the rh drive cars at the rear of the wheel arch. Worth checking. It does not take much to remove the rear bumper to allow better access to repair/check the loom.

Thanks Mick.
Just one thing, what is the lhs that you mentioned? I'm not familiar with the term. I suppose that lh stands for left hand but s could mean more then one thing

Thanks. This means that on a left hand drive car I should be looking for the connection at the rear of the right wheel arch.

Maybe. They might not have deemed it necessary to swap it over. But that is where it will be coming out of the floor. There will be a wire which you tease out to reveal the disconnect plug.
