Bang When a Changing from 4WD TO 2WD was created by Buster1955
Hi, Everyone.

Probably a rookie question, but here goes.

I notice quite a pronounced metallic bang when the 4WD disengages. I tend to stop when disengaging and then move slowly forward rather than doing it on the move, although I get the same sound when doing it either way. Had a few electronic-engage 4WD systems over the years, but this is the first to make any kind of significant noise.

Any thoughts?

Cheers, JC.

Presumably your not driving in 4wd on tarmac and winding the transmission up? The bang would be caused by the tension inn the system. Not a good thing

Same answer as above.
You cannot drive the Jimny in 4wd on wet or dry tarmac only loose gravel, mud, snow etc.
It cannot be used in permanent 4wd like some other vehicles.
Suzuki warn against this in the handbook !!
You will cause serious damage if you are trying it on tarmac??

I started off high and worked my way down ever since :-)

Does it do it if you change while moving?

If his Jimny is the one in the profile pic it's the latest model so assuming it's not operator error it should be going back to the dealer??

Thanks, guys.

I'll do some testing. I cannot say for sure if it happens only on the few times I have been forced to drive ( no more than 2km) on Tarmac before I can change. I like to stop before I change up or down ( perhaps this is unnecessary). I was aware of the no Tarmac rule, but didn't think it would be that sensitive to a short run when there was no choice. I will do some testing. Great advice. Thanks!

JC.
