The older cars had brass/copper parts in the coolant system and the pink stuff slowly
eats them. Not sure about the Jimny but worth checking first. :)

Thank you I knew there was something that didn't agree with red coolant but couldn't think what it was. Hopefully someone an tell me if there's any brass in the 1.3 m13a but engine.

Generally speaking orange/pink types are interchangeable and so are blue/green types (there are exceptions; Mazda now use an 11-year green coolant). Going from one type to the other should involve a really good flush as they can form sludge where they mix. I would stick with the type originally used; the orange/pink OAT types last longer but aren't quite as active as traditional blue/green coolant when it comes to passivating metals and avoiding corrosion.

My car is in for a full service and MOT today. I'll ask them to make sure they test the effectiveness of the coolant and change it if required, like for like. The car is 8 years old now (29,655 miles) and I doubt if it's been changed before.

It's important to have done. A lady I worked with hadn't topped up her coolant and it was mostly water the temperature dropped and her water pump broke and head gasket went. It all could have been avoided.

Will help with corrosion protection and scaling in your engine. I bought some de-ionised water to give it a good flush through. Water is very hard where I live.

The FSM says to use a Ethylene-Glycol based antifreeze.

Car sailed through the MOT. Service completed and coolant tested. Techie told me that coolant good down to -50C so didn't need changing.
