Front tyres scrubbing on full lock was created by darkmunk
Hi guys!
Jimny newb here and straight in with a question, sorry
My front tyres scrub and chirp on full lock (and try to stop the car at very low speed).
The wheels appear to be aligned (visually) and not rubbing. The car is standard.
Incidentally, the 4WD icon (text) is permanently lit up on the speedo, which seems odd.
Engaging 4wd, makes slightly more transmission noise, but otherwise makes no difference.
It feels like the front diff is locked ?? or the tyres are out of line on full lock, with the outside tyre looking like it's turning in too much.
Any ideas where I should look first?
Thanks :)

Sounds like it is stuck in 4wd.

Jack up one front wheel (with it in 2wd), and see if you can rotate it by hand. It should rotate freely. If it rotates with some resistance, watch the front propshaft to see if it turns when you rotate the wheel.

Report back with what happens, I'm guessing you can't rotate the wheel.

Is it a push button or lever operated transfer?

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Cheers. I'll try that now and get back to you.
Is the 4WD setting always locked diff or something? ie. only for off-road or snow?

There is no centre diff (or new fangled viscous coupler)

So 4wd is only for a slippery surface.

AH, ok.
Yes, just done the test with one wheel up and it doesn't turn. It tries to rotate the propshaft to the back wheels.
Is this a common thing? How do I disengage it?
It uses a lever behind the gearstick. The lever appears to engage something and disengage it, but currently it is supposedly in 2WD but I can't turn the wheel.

OK. USER ERROR!
My partner's new car. I was told to push the lever down, but I've just discovered that that is only to lock the diffs or 'AL'
When I simply pushed the lever forward and back it slipped in and out of 2WD easily :)
And the 4WD light went off as expected.
Duhh..
