Jimny won't start - immobilser problem? was created by kifaru
2004 Jimny won't start. When I turn the ignition key to on the immobilser light stays on steady - not flashing. Engine turns over OK, sort of almost starts and then doesnt start. No previous problems at all with the car in about a year. Recently had new battery and spark plugs.
Tried disconnecting battery for a while and reconnecting - no joy. Both keys were working before and both keys don't work now. These keys look like the type with a chip in them but no battery so its not a key battery problem. But anyway if it was both keys wouldnt suddenly die together.
From other posts, it seems I should try scanning the immobiliser for fault codes. How do I do that? I can see the ECU OBD2 socket and connected a primitive scanner to it so that works but have no idea what the codes mean. Do I use the same socket for the immoboliser or is there another socket?. Is there any documentation on immobilser fault codes? If it would help I will buy a proper scanner for the vehicle - if this will help any recommendations?
On the other hand maybe its not the immobiliser at all. Any ideas? I haven't had a petrol car since the 70's so am somewhat out of touch with how they work but I can get help if it looks like a normal ignition problem.
Any suggestion gratefully received.

If the immobiliser light is not flashing then it may not be an immo fault. To pull codes from the immo you need to locate the test socket which is usually a two-pin socket in a 'T' shape, you can use a test lamp to pull the codes. The Jimny FSM can be downloaded here:

Halford was right - it had run out of fuel - it was sitting overnight at quite an angle due to the camber of the road so presumably the remaining petrol had shifted to one side. The tank is quite small and there is no warning light on the fuel gauge so quite easy to overlook.
So i confess to being a complete idiot.

 the tanks are very small and typically only give a range of 200 miles
fill up while it's cheap
