IG 15A fuse blowing was created by Rufus Ruffcut
Hi, sorry if this has been covered before. I did search but couldn't find an answer.

To explain briefly my son has a 2001 Jimny that he has be learning to drive in on private land, yesterday it stopped, he said as if it had been turned off, he tried starting it but it wouldn't run.

When I arrived on the scene I ultimately noticed that although the engine would turn over non of the warning light or the lcd odometer had come on. I then found that the 15A IG fuse had blown.

I replaced the fuse. On turning the key to position 2 when the dash lights should illuminate the fuse just blew again.

I removed the 60A IG fuse under the bonnet and the fuse didn't blow, this was irrelevant as power goes to that first. I did not have my ipad with me yesterday so was not able to look up the manual until this morning.

I am by no means an auto-electrician but as I am a heating engineer I do have a basic understanding of electric circuits.

I realise that there is a "short" in the circuit powered from position 2 of the ignition switch. I was just wondering if anyone could offer any advise to if this could be a component/sensor that has been identified in the past.

The Jimny is 20 miles from where I live and it will be Tuesday before I get a chance to have a look at it. With this in mind if there is more than one solution possible solution please list them so I can try to identify the problem by working through the list.

Many Thanks!

Mike

I'd pull all the fuses, And replace them one at a time to try to narrow down which circuit is blowing the ig fuse.

It's been fettled just a tad.

Top of the head remark is the common component is the ign switch itself! Perhaps it is shorting internally?

Just to let anyone who is interested know.

Ultimately I traced the "short" to the black and white cable taking power to the alternator regulator another cable then takes power back to the battery light. There are seven black and white cables crimped together within the harness, just after it runs through the bulkhead into the engine compartment.

I initially just took the bad cable out of the equation, thinking that having no charge warning light wouldn't be an issue. However on testing the voltage across the battery with the engine running, it appears that the power to the regulator is required for the alternator to charge the battery.

So I have run a new cable to take power down to the regulator and all is now fine!

Thanks again to mickt and Jezz for offering advice!
