jimnybits steel wheels was created by jim
Hi Jimnyers,
Yesterday I ordered a set of offset steel wheels from jimnybits having missed out in May for my birthday present to myself.
I just wanted to know as a I'm not a "rimmer" (don't think that's the right term
) never really worried about wheels before and never owned aftermarket ones. what to I need to know when swapping them over with my standard wheels?
Any tips on... wheel nuts, balancing torque setting, death wobble. etc
I will be getting my local tyre fitter to do the swap. I have standard 205/70/15 AT tyres. I will ask them to double check the balancing and torque the nuts up evenly.
Many thanks for your advice
Jim

Hi Jim
main thing is to check tyre pressures yourself after they're fitted as fitter will probably put them to 30 psi +
how long have you had the current tyres on the car ?

Thanks Hal, the tyres came with the car plenty of tread, no cracking and grip well. I will be keeping some £s aside for some geolander at' s as I have felt confident with the grip in the wet on tarmac. With the old wheels I will look for a set of cheap mud tyres so I can swap them over if we get heavy snow.
I ordered the -30 offset as the stance is just crying out for it. How do you find yours on the rear?

I love them, can't wait to switch the remaing rims
make sure the fitter puts each tyre back to whichever corner it originally came off or you could upset your handling and rear grip.
not long ago i rotated my tyres and discovered that putting unevenly worn tyres (mainly from the front where they wear on the outside edge, and more so on the nearside front due to roundabouts in the UK) onto the rear, totally screws the cars handling and traction - that's why I had to buy two new garbbers which went onto the rear (the old rears going onto the front).

Just had my new rims and tyres fitted and as previously mentioned.......let the air out afterwards. Mine were set to 30psi and would rattle your fillings.
Running stock pressures now and its nice and comfy (might try a few psi lower as the tyres are bigger).

Thanks guys. Ill try and not tell the fitter how to do his job but I will ask:
1. Replace the tyres to same corner
2. Tighten the studs evenly
3. 23/26psi
4. Ask to Balance the wheel from the centre
5. Explain they are susceptible to death wobble
