bottom(crankshaft) outer pulley was created by philpridd
hello all, just broke down in my 2008 Jimny, the two pieces of the bottom pulley, have separated due to the stupid idea of putting a rubber insert inbetween, supposedly bonded to the metal, luckily, no damage seems to have been done to the engine, but at 32000 miles, surely it should have lasted longer then this, have priced a new (genuine) pulley at £130 plus vat, which I will buy rather then chance a secondhand or aftermarket one.Just wondering how long it is likely to last before it goes again, and also if there is an allsteel pulley from the earlier non vvt engines that could be fitted,if not,I might even consider buying an extra new pulley at a later date,to keep as a spare, any comments welcome.Phil.

Quite common with the newer cars. I put it down to the eco-friendly "rubber" nowadays not being as good as the old carcinogenic birth defect causing type.

All the Twin cams use this type of pulley I'm afraid. In fact these pulleys have been around for many years, the one on my MGB had been there since 1978 and did well over 100,000 miles with no problem.

There was a thread on joining the two pieces to make a solid pulley that seemed to work well.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

The original lasting 7 years isn't so bad!

Oh to be young again, when 7 years is a long time

Nowadays the time goes so fast that I probably wouldn't bother latching the bonnet if I knew I had to do the job again in only 7 years. ;)
