I have fitted new alternators in the past which have turned out to be faulty from new, so don't rule that out.

All fuses are fine. Fan belt is tight. Surely there's not many things it could be.

Broken wire? My Transit vans alt light has been on for about two or three years. I checked it was charging as it should then hit the net for research, To find it's a common fault on my van. So if you'res is charging as it should ( I hope you checked before changing expensive parts) then I'd be looking for a bad wire.

It's been fettled just a tad.

If its charging maybe it's a faulty light/ connection on the warning light itself?

Have you actually checked the voltage across the battery with first the engine off and then with it running to see what is actually happening? That would help diagnosis from a distance. If you have not got a meter then a garage will /should stick a meter across it in the hope of selling you a new battery/alternator.
