As far as I can tell I have what they call a "lazy alternator", batt light is on when ticking over, goes off over 2500 rev
To me it's just a piece of metal with a belt attached  , the problem is not getting it off (got some scanners  ) but what one I put in its place ?
Seen them on e-bay for just over £100 but the connection is on the side not on the back, is this a problem, are they crap or an I looking at the wrong ones
Please help me coz only have little charge left

When the light "goes off" does it stay off when the car then goes back to idle speed? Have you a voltmeter or hand held switchable electric meter? If so select "dc volts" in a range to cover your cars output(should be max 15volts or so) and check the alternators output. Hopefully it will show about 14.4 volts when the light is out. If so the alternator is OK. You can check your battery voltage too using the meter before you switch anything on to check how it is but that is not a total check of the battery. You will need a load meter to do that. Most garages will do that check for you if you are nice to them!

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

The main connection is on the side, a bolt & ring, then the plug goes in the back
Look for 101211-0720, Lucas LRA1739 LRA1836 HELLA JA1293
If you take yours off, (not as easy as it looks BTW) and remove the tin can off the back end you may find that mud has got into the brushes, and you can fix it.
You will never get the main body apart, so don't try.

Alternators can be repaired, normally for a lot less than the cost of replacement, normally about £30. Find a local motor rewinder!

Thx all for the quick response, looks like there more than a piece of metal with a belt attached
Will take it off, wish me luck I'm going in
