Is it a good idea to protect the diff? I have no idea how strong they are.

Most people seem to say that jimny diffs are strong and do not need extra protection.

Also a lot of people are not wanting to lose any ground clearance.

My jim is now my daily driver, so am wanting to protect things a bit more.

For me, my main concern is when driving through rocky streams etc as you do not see what is underneath!

Some people say that a guard will act as a skid, enabling the diff to slide over objects it might have got stuck on before.

I think if you can live with the loss of clearance, which is minimal, it is a good idea B)

I lost a whole quarter of an inch! ;)

As Rus from JimnyBits said to me, their design brief was to keep it the same height as the bottom of the radius arms -

The diff pumpkin cap is thin as paper and dents quite easily so yes even for the mild of off road driving irs a good idea. I dont like the idea of having a big scoop just for carrying mud though lol.
I personally think just the weld on strip is plenty.
My biggest concern would be continued hits to the diff guard would result in damaged radius arm bolts.
