can i tighten up my steering box was created by mark 88
hi all i have slight play in my steering box which i believe is causing my death wobble . old vw beetles have a steering box and im told that you can tighten them up by slackening of a lock nut and using a flat top screwdriver adjust them.
i found a similar setup on my jimny but before i start fiddling i thought id ask for info first
thanks all

well i run 235/75/15 tyres so as they are quite heavy so the steering box must take a fair pounding with them

According to my dvd maintenance manual there is an adjustment screw under the manual gearbox section which is mentioned in the power steering section as for compensating for wear in the output part of the box. It details using a pull of spring balance to measure the resistance before and after turning the adjuster. I reckon if you just crack the lock nut and turn the slotted screw head say half a turn in and see if it makes any difference it should not do any harm. Do not forget to relock the lock nut. You could always go back to original position. It is a mechanical adjustment meant to take up the slack/wear in the cam and worm of the box.
