The trip meter record trip mileage: how far you have been since you zeroed it.

There are two trips A&B

Zero trip A every time you fill the tank, then you know how many miles left to a refill.
Zero trip B when you renew your insurance (if you have a limited miles policy) then you know how many miles you have left.

There are other uses, e.g. zero trip B when you start your Paris-Dakkar run, zero trip A every time you fill up, then at the end of the run trip B tells you how far you've been.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Badly worded on my part

Just like a 'bike, you know how far it will go on a full tank, you zero when you fill up, and then refill when you have travelled the distance you thought of minus 30 miles. (Fuel gauges are for sissies ;) )

Or, you look at the tripmeter at the garage, divide the mileage by 7, and that is about how many litres of fuel you need.

I always fill up my cars on miles travelled, the fuel gauge is "indication only": although if it suddenly shot down I'd look out for a leak.

(7 miles to the litre doesn't work off-road though :) )

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
