4WD to 2WD problem was created by Epideme
Hi
I have an issue for which I would be very grateful of some insight.
I own a 2004 Jimny with manual 2/4/Low shift mechanism. Had the vehicle for over 5 years and love it. No mods to speak of apart from hub extenders which went on as soon as I bought the car.
It’s developed a habit of not wanting to shift back to 2WD after being in 4WD. You put it into 2WD, set off, and then the lever slips back into 4WD and the 4WD light comes back on. It will eventually go into 2WD and stay there no problem. This issue does not reoccur until I use 4WD again. When the problem occurs I can feel vibration coming back through the lever, sometimes very noticeable, sometimes much less so.
Changing to and using 4WD HI/LOW is no problem. On the odd occasion it will go back into 2WD with no problem, but generally speaking it takes several attempts to get it back into 2WD, stopping, starting, switching engine off etc.
Many thanks for any pointers or info
Paul

Many thanks for the response. I’ll try to get under it tomorrow for a look, no garage and it’s currently hailing and raining here (Outer Hebrides). My house is way off the beaten track down a muddy/stony track that looks like two streams at the moment! Makes fettling with the car a bit difficult sometimes…
Cheers, Paul

Well, oddly enough I'm a boat owning sea angler too! Boat moored at my house on the sea loch, sorry, I'll stop there, it sounds like I'm rubbing it in! It's hard to beat here during the summer, winters are a real bummer though, long, cold, wet and windy (115 MPH at my place a few weeks ago).

I managed to get under the car today to take a look the transfer box mounts and they look absolutely fine.
This is a bit depressing because to my mind it seems to point the finger at the transfer box itself as the problem, unless anyone has any other thoughts ?
Thanks, Paul
