Custom Radius arm question... was created by jwriebe
Hello all!

I am new to the Forum, and to Jimny ownership in general! I live in Okinawa and have recently purchased a 2000 Jimny Wide. It is equipped with the G13B and Auto Transmission. It is such a neat little vehicle and I thoroughly enjoy it, that being said, now I'd like to mess around with it.

I have owned a total of 7 Samurais, our Jimny/Sierra in the US, and have thoroughly enjoyed using and abusing them. I am unfamiliar with the suspension setup on my current Jimny, callsign "Juggernaut," and have a few questions:

1) Has anyone attempted to build radius arms out of square tube, utilizing heims joints/bolts to act as castor adjusters?

2) Has anyone attmepted to flip the radius arms to the top of the axle, utilizing the same construction setup as prevously mentioned?

3) Anyone successfully modified the stock radius arms to make them adjustable?

Overall I am currently planning to attempt a setup which puts the radius arm over the axle and utilizes the heims joints so that I can achieve an "infinite" angle adjustment. I "think" this would allow me to run pretty much whatever size lift, within reason, I could slap together.

Looking for thoughts/opinions and comments!

Thanks again!

Jon

Hi and welcome, I think all of the above have been tried, but everyone comes back to the same system in the end. I wouldn't modify the standard arms, leave well alone, if you make yourself some new arms please be sure to make some calculations on the stress and loadings - one manufacturer here made lots of radius arms that snapped, thankfully only while going slow but would have been horrible at60mph.there is a reason people use round tube for the arms rather than square, copes better with the loading, the flat faces of square bar offer less resistance to bending.

In all honesty if you are an expert engineer with fantastic fabricating skills go ahead and make some, if you are someone who is just handy with a welder the leave well alone unless you understand how to calculate the stress forces involved.

Gents,

Thanks for the replies. Definitely appreciate the input/experience.

I am surprised that people return to the stock setup. To me it has the look of a dumpster fire of engineering.

Again, I appreciate the input. I will probably move forward with attempting to put the radius arms above the axle... Will post info/struggles as they emerge!

Thanks,

S/F
