Does the rev counter go mental?and the car with a padlock light flash on the dash?

My guess would be crank shaft sensor, plenty of info on here that a quick search should show.

Sounds the same as the fault I had, theres a simple test: take a squirty bottle of water out with you and when the car faults LEAVE IT RUNNING and squirt water on the sensor (hiding under the alternator) if normal running resumes theres the fault. The sensors get old and overheat..........bout £20-30.

I get nervous reading some of these posts. Our Jimnys are tough little cars but it seems theres a lot that can go wrong with them...

I guess all we can do is make sure the maintenance is done regularly (I change my oil every 5000km), dont do anything dumb, and hope for the best....
