vvt gearbox was created by wombat
just put a deposit on a 2008 vvt. only done 22000 miles. when driving the gearbox seems noisy under power but is quiet when the throttle is lifted. not picking it up till next weekend and the garage seems to think propshaft problem. have heard that vvt boxes are poor but surely not at this mileage, quiet when cold seems to happen when warmed up. am i right to be wondering if ive done the right thing ?

The bearings on VVT boxes can fail. A friend of mine had one go and took out half the gearset. He spent £1400 getting it fixed

Get underneath and check if there is any sign of oil around the gearbox output where the prop goes in to the gearbox.
The prop sometimes sprays it around the body and on to the exhaust so you may smell it.
There was a manufacturing fault and the only cure is a new prop shaft and seal although the seal is not the problem.
The shield/guard round the prop splines was fitted with faulty adhesive and the oil works its way down inside and comes out at the universal joint.
Most of these were done under warranty but some escaped especially on low mileage ones like mine when I bought it (30000mls).
Mine was out of warranty but the dealer replaced it for cost of parts only.
Obviously if not found in time your gearbox could have been running low oil for some time and the bearings will go bang.
Mine makes a little bit of transmission resonance around 45/50 while accelerating slightly in a high gear but it's been like that since I got it and hasn't got any worse despite towing a caravan around the Highlands and has now done 50k
Jimnys are more truck like in the transmission noise so are noisier than a car so might seem extra noisy to someone not used to them but it's difficult to judge noises so if you know someone who could give a second opinion that would be the way to go but if the dealer wants to change something before a sale let him do it and see if it cures the noise?
If not don't buy it as that gives you a get out.
This gearbox is completely different and is the third type fitted to the Jimny.
They are still rare on the s/h market so prices are still high.
Cam Suzuki sometimes offer recon ones for about £850 on ebay which is way cheaper than Suzuki and about the same cost of getting the bearings/ seals done locally at a gearbox rebuilder. If the gearbox gets wrecked it will cost a lot more

My gearbox has just had new bearings and I've noticed burning oil smell . It looks like it is leaking from the back of the box could that mean I need a new prop shaft ? I had oil changed last year it smelt then for a bit then stopped and this year gearbox went bang . Mines a 56 plate with the r72 box

Do you literally mean the bearings have been changed recently?? If you had the whole job done for you inc fitting take it back!!
If not first of all I would get underneath and either clean off as much as you can or get someone to do it for you with a steam cleaner/pressure wash.
Then get the oil level checked. It's not unknown for them to be over filled as it's a very small amount so it just gets pushed out of the breather until it reaches the proper level.
I had the burning smell after getting the prop/seal replaced.
Once all that is done you can then investigate to see if you can find out where the oil is coming from??
If it's the prop it throws oil on to the underneath of the body and,of course, the exhaust.
A leaky output seal is fairly obvious.
There was a post on here somewhere where he filled the prop shield/tube over the splines with epoxy in the centre of the "Y".
This was the fault as where this tube attaches to the UJ it was filled with adhesive and it wasn't done properly so oil could leak down and out.
My Suzuki dealer said that he had done quite a few.
As yours is one of the early ones I would presume the prop may have been done as they generally go about 25/30 k miles?? Good luck
I believe the replacement prop is a different part number so what has changed I don't know but it worked.
