Which exhaust part do I need?

My 2005 JLX got an exhaust blow which the garage informed me was just in front of the cat. I was hoping to have this welded but now the exhaust is making a horrible rattling noise once its warm. On looking underneath I can't actually see any damage mind you.

I think its the section attached to the manifold but before the cat that's at fault.

In the pic I think its the pipe on the left at fault.

Do I need the full cat assembly like this?

This part is about £100 on eBay but I wouldn't be able to fit it myself. Is it best to buy the part and get a garage to fit it or use an exhaust place like quik fit etc to supply and fit the part?

Many thanks :)

I cant actually see anything wrong with yours

The usual source of the most terrible rattle, that has dogs howling, cows going dry, chickens sucking the eggs back in and everyone in the street staring and pointing, is the silver cover on the catalyst, with the perforated holes in- it comes loose, looks like yours already has on one side and been fixed back on with bolts, likely the other side is off now.

If the hole is in that pipe and not bodgeable, yes you do need the whole thing. Get a price at Kwick-fit if you dare :woohoo: they won't supply a £100 part, and get a price for fitting one you supply at your friendly garage, likely about £45.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

my exhaust split between the downpipe and cat (i think thats where your on about) about a year ago, i had it welded up and it was fine, its just a compression fitting and i presume over the heat cycles it gets loose and eventually spits apart, quick bit of welding and good as new,

as facade says the rattlings probably the heatsheild,

I had my cat replaced at a Wilco/Fastfit and to be honest the cost was much the same as ebay so why struggle with rusted bolts??

I started off high and worked my way down ever since :-)

Thanks for the replies guys :) I can't see any damage to the heat shield but its v loud rattling! It looks like this from the other side

I have noticed though that this part looks like it could rattle, not sure it would make such a racket though!

I think I'll take it to the garage and ask them to have a proper look at it on the ramp to see if its saveable or whether I'll need to fork out for a new one! Might ask the local exhaust places for a quote just to see if they're compatible to sourcing the parts myself
