Another knocking noise was created by 2013gary
Hi everyone,

My sister has two issues with her Jimny. I recently changed the front callipers and pads as one of the calliper's pistons had seized and the brake pedal was very low. After doing this I bled the brakes but the pedal is still not quite right. It starts off fine, but then gets lower until it is pumped again. There is no obvious fluid leak and the level stays the same under the bonnet.

Another thing is a very odd knocking sound that appears to come from the nearside back wheel. This is fairly constant but it gets worse when lifting off the accelerator. I thought it was a problem with the wheel nuts because she has alloys and it had the wheel nuts for steel wheels but after changing them all the noise still persists.

Could the issues be related? I don't know where to start looking.

Mine was knocking from the rear axle, I got a friend to rock the car while I layed at the back and inspected, found my shock mount bolt had come loose and was allowing some movement. Tightened it up, problem gone. Not saying it's definatly the problem but worth a quick check. :)

Also my wheel bearing was clicking and knocking when it had failed, noticeable when driving with the window down mostly. Jack up the rear and check for play up and down /side to side. Some play in and out is acceptable so don't confuse that like I did :pinch:

recently done my rear wheel bearings and theres now very little in out play whereas before i replaced them there was quite abit of play.

both sides were ruined but offered up different noises and symptoms; initially we got the usuall whiring sound which we thought was coming from the passenger side, after a few weeks of it getting louder i noticed the drivers side was leaking oil which is generally a sign of a knackered bearing. after a couple days it started to make horrendous intermittent screeching noises like it was locking up.............. so i took it off the road ordered a bearing from here and we set about replacing the drivers side bearing (which upon removal had cracked the entire way round the side), once done we set off home only to discover the whirring had got ALOT quieter but the horrible intermittent screeching was still there!!!once id crept home we ordered another bearing as we decided it had to be the other side to, upon inspection of the passenger bearing you could see a clear bulge where a ball had almost gone through the face of the bearing!every ball inside was flat spotted and the whole lot was rusty and shity but it never leaked any oil.

think what im trying to say is just because it doesnt sound like a wheel bearing it doesnt mean it isnt lol...................check all the linkages (suspension radius arms panhard etc) for play/excessive wear then check the rear brakes then pull the shafts and check the bearings for any obvious signs of wear.

Check the front wheelbearings, any play here pushes the brake pads off the disc and you need to pump the pedal to push them back out.

Also, there is a bleed nipple on top of the brake compensator valve above the rear axle that needs bleeding if you have taken a front pipe off.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
