Tie rod end help was created by The Dug
Evening folks,

Started my king pin bearing replacement today and it's turned into a bit of a disaster.

Due to my wee swim in salt water a few weeks back a lot of the bolts have crumbled (rear brake calliper bolt and all four of the backing plate) so I've had to chisel them off, this has left me with a drill and tap job.

However, main problem at the moment is the tie rod end top nut is spinning and I can't get it off, I've tried jacking it up, clamping it with joint splitters and different mole grips but no joy - can anyone suggest another approach? Last resort will be cut it off and replace the end but I really want to avoid that if I can.

Cheers

probably be cheaper and quicker to get a tie rod end.. if its the one going through the hole on the hub then reality is that its usually corroded to hell anyway.. mine was a bugger to get off but I have the benefit of an impact gun

You could try a nut splitter

or hacksaw down one side as close to the tread as possable then undo it and get a new lock nut

Don't use the Laser ones. Crap things. The locking grub screw that stops the splitter from rotating always snaps. Also the machining of the thread that the splitter screws into is rubbish, keep getting stuck.

All 3 of mine did that: I just split the nuts and got new ones- they are fine thread same size as the wheelnuts M12x1.25 IIRR.

Can't remember how I split them, could have hacksawed a slice out, could have used a nut splitter, most likely the nutsplitter, I usually try that first.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
