Not very technical so apologies if my question sounds stupid.

I have a 2004 A/T M13A Jimny which suffered from bad shifting and terrible gas consumption. I had my mechanic overhaul the tranny which definitely improved the shifting. The consumption problem, on the other hand, did not go away even with the work he did.

Here's what I know he did:

- removed the CAT (live in the Philippines and our emission standards are not very strict).
- serviced the valves and replaced valve seals which improved compression a lot.

Right now, I'm thinking it could be a faulty O2 sensor.

My question is, how many O2 sensors are there? My mechanic said there wasn't one behind the CAT which is where I know the 2nd one is supposed to be.

By the way, my Jimny has the older ECU which has an OBD2 port, but uses the proprietary standard.

If it uses the proprietary format then it would only have one O2 sensor.

Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.

If replacing the O2 sensor doesn't help, can anyone suggest any other fix?

I replace my sparks every 5000km and only use 10W40 fully synth from Royal Purple.

Another question: can the ECU be replaced with an OBD2 compliant version? If so, where can I find one and how much?

Is the Check Engine Light on? swapping to an OBD2 ECU isn't really practical so it will be down to old fashioned diagnostics, checking the sensors with a multimeter, unless you can find someone with a Suzuki scantool.

Check Engine Light is not on.

I have a friend who has a device called a Launch X431 . It can supposedly read the signals coming from the ECU. Unfortunately, he owns it but doesnt really know how to use it.

In particular, what should I be testing for and what value should I expect?

The Launch may well work. The FSM has a table of expected scan tool values, check all of them but in particular check the reported temperatures from the Coolant Sensor and Air temperature sensors. The fuel trims - these should be around zero, if they are much greater then that indicates a fuelling, lambda sensor or cat issue. If the Launch has controls then check that the EGR works correctly
