Metallic Rattle was created by lukeyblunt
Hi All,

Went out yesterday.. and halfway down the high street, I realised a metallic, hollow sounding rattle when I turned the music down.

It sounds a little like I'm dragging an aluminium chain. .. Of course, I pulled over and checked it over.. but there was nothing blindingly obvious.

I jacked it up today and span a wheel, and it made the same sound, but slower.
I'm no mechanic but I'm assuming it's something to do with the drive shaft…?

Any other ideas..? Also, what's the fix likely to be..? And why's it done this? - I don't want it happening again!

Cheers,
Luke

The hubs on front wheels.

Get an E10 torx socket and unbolt them, and the hub will just come off. Then check that its clean inside and the sleeve that goes over the drive shaft moves freely in and out.

Then just bolt back on. Might be worth putting some sealant on the mating surfaces to keep the water out. Oh and a little bit of fresh grease on the sleeve as well.

Thanks for your response, chaps.

It's not the front wheels. I've jacked up the front and spun them and they don't make the sound.
It's only the back ones, and it sounds like it's coming from the drive shaft..?

Not a clue.

Ok so it could be a knackered shaft but it's normally the fronts that go on a J.

Have you definitely got oil in the rear diff?

Check the back of the rear wheel to see if there is any leaks, it could be a sign that your wheel bearings are shot.

Do both wheels make the noise or just one side?
