The Jeep Cherokee XJ that uses the VM 2.5 engine has an AX 15 5 speed gearbox. The ratios are 3.83, 2.33, 1.44, 1.0 and .79. The gearbox is 24 inches long. The 2.5 VM engine is completely different from the later model 2.8.

As for jeep axles I think that's what I'll use as I already have everything needed and they're strong and gearing is the same as my joint too.

Just to find some 16" steels which should be easy

I think with the massive torque of the 2.5 VM Derv and your 5.1 Transferbox it should be good, even so that you might need to upgrade to a Yota transferbox, maybe a word with Rockwatt is worthwile?.

No probs adamjimny, I am in the process of collecting all the bits to change my TJ Wrangler from auto to manual. You can guess which manual box I am going to use!
The rear axle on the XJ is not the strongest - it's a Dana 35 but probably strong enough for a Jimny. The front is a Dana 30 and plenty strong enough.
Good luck.

If you decide to use a Toyota transfer box you could consider using the gearbox and transfer box from a Toyota Forrunner as it uses an Ax15 manual box. However you would need to use the primary shaft and bell housing from the VM box so that it would bolt to the VM engine. Not sure if that really helps you! But food for thought!
