I'm looking to replace all 4 tyres on our Jimny, the current Duellers are well worn and with winter approaching now's the time to change them.

From what I've gathered from reading on here, and other sites, the Duellers aren't the best choice by a long shot.

Our Jimny is just a road car and is more of a backup for when the snow arrives, which up here in Moray (NE Scotland) is highly likely.

I've read lots of threads on BigJimny, but most seem concerned with either a degree of off road, or increased size etc. We're just after a good road tyre that can cope with decent quantities of snow, so any suggestions or experiences would be appreciated.

There appears to be some good offerings from Hankook and Yokohama.

Cheers,

Chris.

Actually I would disagree :)

I have videos of me driving around in pretty slippery conditions in Surrey when we had severe snow about 9 months ago. I coped with no hesitation, even driving up some steep hills.

Yes, if your looking to plough throw 1m snow drifts then better tyres will cope better but Duellers are not that bad.

Actually not me.

There are quite a few snow tyres available and I think narrow is possibly better to cut through the slush.

IMHO half the battle is that the tyre isn't well worn out which is why I think some off the chunky off road tyres possibly do so well.

All Terrain (AT) tread is far better in snow than Mud Terrain (MT) tread in snowy conditions as the tread fills with snow providing grip. The snow falls out of the large open MT treads.

The deep tread of an AT tread provides better bite than a standard road tyre.

General Grabbers AT, Cooper Discoveries, BF Goodrich AT, Yokohama AT...
Stick with 205/75 or 215/75 as you have no lift

Thanks for the replies guys, some good points there.

I'm going to go for the Yokohama Geolander A/T-S G012, based on a combination of favourable reviews, the cost and also the fact that they're available in the 70 profile size. I appreciate that the Grabbers are seen as the better tyre, but I'd rather stick to the standard tyre size.

Now I just want loads of snow to go and play in....

The tyre size was my concern before purchasing, however I found the extra 5mm of diameter actually makes the speedo read bang on the correct speed!

The Yokohama is the tyre 660cc Jimny's are fitted with in Japan... except they run 16inch rims
