Broken 4WD help ??! was created by Dave91
Hello everyone! i'm new to this site and to offroading. I have a slightly modified 03 jimny (will post pics later) and I managed to get stuck in a bog today. There was a nasty clunk noise then I lost drive to the front wheels. Luckily somebody was just passing in a vitara and pulled me out because I wasn't getting anywhere in rwd. He seemed to think ive snapped a half shaft?? does this sound right? what sort of money am I looking at to fix etc etc
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Possible, more likely a broken CV joint.
Either way the hub has to come off to pull the halfshaft out, with CV joint.
Usually the shortest one breaks first.
It is also possible to break the differential, again the half shafts need to come out to remove it.

Does the CV joint come separate from the half shaft? or would I need to buy the whole thing? sorry if this is a dumb question, the 4x4 world is new to me. fingers crossed its not a broken differential that sounds expensive!

Ive had both shafts out today and they both seem fine, not that i really knew what I was looking for but all the splines were ok and if i turned the shaft by hand it turned at the cv end. Does this mean the diff is goosed? something I did notice was with all 4 wheels off the ground and in 4wd with the hubs off I could see the shafts turning but when the wheels are on they dont turn :S could this be the hubs not vacuming properly?? sorry again if I sound like an idiot but im not a mechanic. Any help or theories would be good thanks

Stands a good chance especially as the vac hub system seems to be one of the Jimny's regular weaknesses. The newcomer to the Jimny (and maybe 4x4s) could very well be foxed. Keep asking the questions, it's what the forum is for!
