Wheel and tyre unsprung weight was created by helijohn
Since I went back to standard wheels the Chimny does seem to bounce less on the road. The MoT tester mentioned that maybe the (rear) brakes were having to work harder with the larger wheel/tyre combo and not only did that set me thinking about that issue but I also have been thinking about unsprung weight. The standard wheels are lighter by 4kg so it is like having and extra two 2L bottles of water at each corner. Now if the brakes are only just able to cope with standard weight what about the dampers and the springs? Controlling a 22kg wheel (7x15 steel with 225/70/15 tyre) bouncing over potholes can't be easy and I don't think the Jimny can really cope.

My Pajero alloys, again 15", weigh almost 30kg and are shod with 30-10.5-15. So using steel wheels with that size of tyre must be putting tremendous weight under the springs and dampers on a small vehicle like the Jimny. I am wondering how many folks feel the extra bounce when using say 6x15 steel rims and 30-9.5-15 tyres.

The standard alloy wheels and tyres are far too heavy for the gross weight of the Jimny as a road car. I really notice it with pot holes and drain covers.
The only way forward I agree is to get the unsprung weight down. What about light weight racing alloys and 185x55x18 tyres which give a diameter of 660mm compared to the standard 668. Not sure about the ride though!

Yes, sounds good but then we have less ground clearance and I do like to run up kerbs. And I like a bulging sidewall just in case. ;) Plus the things would cost a fortune I expect.

Ride hight would be the same ground clearance would be 4mm less

Forgot to mention that unsprung weight is not just about the wheels and tyres but includes:
Brakes, Hubs and a proportion of the axle and other bits.

Yes, I didn't spot the 18. Thought it said 15.
