I'm going to be the devil's advocate on this and ask what is so bad about the viscous fan??
I recognise all the advantages of an electric one.
It's a mod I've done a lot of times since Ford Anglias ran around with two bladed steel windmills for fans. My problem is that for some reason a motor that is used to a fan blowing all of the time, even when the fan is in idle, seems not to like no fan which is what you get until it kicks in. Also I like the idea of a fan being on all the time blowing air 24/7.

Hi, Just put my side forward on this one! I personally prefer the electric fan option as it improves fuel and increase BHP, not by much but an improvement all the same. If you fit a 3 way toggle switch you can turn off the fan when wading or have it running all the time if you like and the 3rd position in normal running off the thermostat. Down side is it's takes about £150 out of your wallet!!

Yes, worth doing for that alone. I can't go with an argument that they are quieter (when off) cos when on they are right noisy.

The gains are extremely small as the Jimny fan is designed to freewheel over 3000 RPM anyway, unless the engine is getting very hot when it will lock up. I doubt if you'll gain much more than 1bhp under normal use. Take a rolled up newspaper and shove it in the fan and it'll stop - there just isn't any power behind it.
The only reason that I run an electric fan is so I can turn it off when wading, my viscous coupled fan died after too many dunks.
