Not sure what clutch is fitted in mine but sounds possible cause. As you said lot of work to try it!

Update: I bought genuine Suzuki Jimny clutch from www.ebay.co.uk/str/simssizukiparts at £174. When this was fitted the problem was fixed. Thanks for the previous postings that suggested this solution.
